Isak joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in August 2022 and despite his young age, he arrived on Tyneside with strong experience at football's elite level, having played in the top divisions in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain as well as for his country.
Born in Solna, Stockholm, and of Eritrean descent, he began his career at local club AIK before being snapped up by Borussia Dortmund.
Following a successful loan spell at Dutch side Willem II, during which he scored 13 goals in 16 Eredivisie appearances, Isak moved to Real Sociedad in 2019. He made an immediate impact in San Sebastián, scoring seven goals in the 2019/20 Copa Del Rey as the club won its first major trophy since 1987.
A thigh injury meant Isak missed around four months of his first campaign in black and white but his impact was still keenly felt as he netted 11 goals in all competitions to help United reach the Carabao Cup final and return to the Champions League courtesy of a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
And his second season at the club was a spectacular one, as he became the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer 20 years previously to hit over 20 goals in a Premier League campaign, earning those nominations for the league's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.
