Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock wants to “put one over” on Premier League-bound Newcastle United when the two sides meet in the Welsh capital.

United travel to the Cardiff City Stadium for their final away game of the campaign on Friday night (7.45pm kick-off), which will be televised live on Sky Sports.

Rafa Benitez’s side beat the Bluebirds 2-1 in the reverse fixture at St. James’ Park back in November, with Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran scoring for the Magpies.

But Cardiff’s experienced boss Warnock is keen for his charges to perform in what is their final home game of the campaign, though knows his side don’t have anything to play for.

“We just have pride at stake. We need to put a good performance on in front of the TV cameras,” Warnock told cardiffcityfc.co.uk. “With Newcastle coming, it’s a game that whets the appetite. It will be a good crowd and the Geordies will be coming to celebrate. “Hopefully we can put one over on them. I was delighted they won on Monday because it adds more spice to our game. That’s what I was hoping for really."

Newcastle sealed their promotion to the top flight on Monday with a 4-1 win over Preston North End at St. James’ Park.

And with two games left, there is still an outside chance they could catch league leaders Brighton & Hove Albion.

With the quest for the Championship title having proved to be a two-horse race for much of the campaign, Warnock admitted he’s relieved that United won’t be among the teams his side will have to face in the league next term. “I think Newcastle have got the biggest squad, and it’s a blessing that they are going up really, because you don’t want Newcastle in the Championship too long,” he said.

“I can see it being a much more even division next season with the teams that are coming down and the teams coming up. It’s not going to be an easy league next year, but I don’t think there’ll be outstanding teams, if I’m honest.”
