Team news from the Etihad Stadium as the Magpies take on the champions

United face Pep Guardiola's men less than a week on from their Carabao Cup final heartache at Wembley against City's local rivals, with Howe choosing to bring in Gordon on the left side of his forward line and captain Jamaal Lascelles, who lines up at the heart of defence alongside Sven Botman.

And goalkeeper Nick Pope, who missed last Sunday's final loss to Manchester United through suspension, is back between the posts after his one-match ban.

The former Burnley custodian starts behind a back four of Kieran Trippier, Lascelles, Botman and Dan Burn, with Bruno Guimarães passed fit to line up at the base of the Magpies' midfield.

Sean Longstaff and Joelinton will play either side of the Brazilian in the middle of the park, with Miguel Almirón and Gordon providing support for Callum Wilson in attack.

Martin Dúbravka is back on the bench after being cup-tied, like Gordon was, for the cup final last weekend, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak also named.

Defensively, there is backup in the form of Javier Manquillo, Matt Targett and Matt Ritchie, with Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy and Elliot Anderson also named as substitutes.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman, Dan Burn; Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton; Miguel Almirón, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon.

Substitutes: Martin Dúbravka, Javier Manquillo, Matt Targett, Matt Ritchie, Elliot Anderson, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Allan Saint-Maximin, Alexander Isak.
