Four players who started last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Southampton at St. James’ Park – Ciaran Clark, Jonjo Shelvey, Miguel Almirón and Allan Saint-Maximin – haven’t travelled to Lancashire, nor has usual substitute goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
It means there is an unfamiliar look to Newcastle’s line-up in the attacking half of the pitch, with Carroll – United’s captain for the day – likely to start up front on his own, with Joelinton and Christian Atsu providing support from wider roles.
In midfield, Sean Longstaff comes in for Shelvey, while Fabian Schär replaces Clark in central defence.
With Darlow also absent, there is a spot on the bench for Rob Elliot, who hasn’t played a single minute for the Magpies for more than two years.
Another name missing from United’s ranks for a while, Florian Lejeune, is also among the substitutes at Turf Moor, as is Yoshinori Muto.
Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schär, Federico Fernández, Paul Dummett, Jetro Willems, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Christian Atsu, Joelinton, Andy Carroll.
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, DeAndre Yedlin, Emil Krafth, Florian Lejeune, Matty Longstaff, Yoshinori Muto, Dwight Gayle.
