Steve Bruce has made nine changes to Newcastle United's starting XI ahead of this evening's Carabao Cup second round tie against Burnley (kick-off 7.45pm BST).

The Magpies host the Clarets at St. James' Park for a place in the third round of the competition but goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and captain Jamaal Lascelles are the only figures who maintain their places from Saturday's Premier League defeat at Aston Villa.

In front of Woodman contains a five-man defence, with Emil Krafth and Ciaran Clark - who both started on the opening day of the 2021/22 season against West Ham United - partnering Lascelles at the heart of Newcastle's backline.

Javier Manquillo and Jamal Lewis both gain their first competitive starts of the season, occupying the respective full-back positions.

Jeff Hendrick, who joined the Magpies from Burnley last summer, partners Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park while Ryan Fraser and Joelinton will provide attacking support for Dwight Gayle.

Steve Bruce has a number of attacking options to deploy from the bench if needed, including Joe Willock, Miguel Almirón and Allan Saint-Maximin, who has scored in his last two league appearances against the Clarets.

Matty Longstaff, Jacob Murphy and Fabian Schär are also named on the substitutes' bench.

Mark Gillespie, who made his Magpies debut in last year's Carabao Cup win over Blackburn Rovers, is also named on the bench as a back-up goalkeeper.

Newcastle United: Freddie Woodman, Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles (c), Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick, Sean Longstaff, Ryan Fraser, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle.

Substitutes: Mark Gillespie, Jacob Murphy, Fabian Schär, Matty Longstaff, Joe Willock, Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almirón.
