Newcastle United were saddened to hear of the death of former goalkeeper Stewart Mitchell over the weekend. He was 89.

Born in Glasgow, Mitchell started his career at local side Benburb before joining United in September 1953. He stayed at St. James’ Park for a decade, with his 48 games spread across seven different campaigns.

Predominantly a reserve to the likes of Ronnie Simpson, Bryan Harvey and Dave Hollins, Mitchell performed well whenever called upon, and racked up 11 appearances in 1958/59. He was unfortunate to break a finger after taking over the No. 1 jersey following an injury to Simpson.

Mitchell moved back to Scotland in June 1963, signing for Third Lanark as part of the deal which saw Dave Hilley move in the opposite direction. He later lived in Hamilton, working as a manager in financial advice with SunLife in Glasgow.

A regular visitor back to Tyneside, Mitchell was always proud to have been a part of United’s history. The thoughts of everybody at the club are with Stewart’s family and friends at this very sad time.
