The Senegalese star has been one of the Magpies' key performers in recent weeks, having initially struggled to establish himself at St. James' Park following his arrival from Hull City in the summer of 2016.

He won the FUN88 player of the month award for January - and followed that up with another imperious display as Rafa Benítez's side beat Manchester United last time out.

Diamé is now set to make the 200th Premier League appearances of his career when Newcastle travel to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday (kick-off 3pm UK time).

And, speaking to NUFC TV as he received the award, the 30-year-old admitted: "I think everyone here knows I was a little bit frustrated about my performances since I arrived and to receive this honour is a very good feeling.

"It gives me the feeling that I have to give more and make sure it happens more times. I want to be the player I used to be and I know I didn't give the best football since I've been here.

"It's been frustrating but the first person frustrated is me, they (the fans) have to know that. I'm trying to work hard to make sure I'm keeping this good level."

When asked whether he had changed anything about his preparations in order to improve his fortunes on the pitch, Diamé explained: "Little things - but little things can make the difference, like checking what I eat and working harder at training.

"I always listen to the manager, what he is asking me, but there are some details that you have to look after yourself."
