Adam Armstrong also featured for the Three Lions, coming off the bench for Everton’s Kieran Dowell with 15 minutes to play.

England saw off China PR in their tournament opener on Saturday – a game in which Armstrong made his Under-21s bow – but will now need to better Mexico’s result in their final Group A fixture – against Qatar on Friday – to make sure of their place in the semi-finals.

Any sort of victory – or even a point – may yet be enough, though, depending on how results go in the competition’s other two groups. Only the best runner-up will join the three group winners in the last four.

Boothroyd’s side are bidding to retain a trophy they have won two years on the spin, and six times overall.
