Newcastle United's players are preparing to return to pre-season training as the countdown continues to the new Premier League campaign kicking off on Saturday, 6th August

The goal from the first whistle will be to build on a very strong run of form in the second half of last season, which saw a relegation battle transformed into a fight for a place in the top half of the table come the end of the season.

The sparkling turnaround in form started with the last match of 2021, a 1-1 draw at home against Manchester United. That began a run which saw Newcastle amass 39 points in the last 20 games of the season, a tally only bettered by title challengers Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Magpies will hope to pick up where they left off when they open the new season in front of their home supporters against newly-promoted Nottingham Forest in early August. Steve Cooper's side finished fourth in the Championship last season, but a 1-0 playoff final victory over Huddersfield Town secured them top-flight football for the first time since the 1998/99 season.

Back then, they didn't get much joy against Newcastle, who did the double over Forest with a 2-0 win at home and 2-1 away victory. Since then, the sides have met twice at St. James' Park in the Championship and both ended in home wins, so the Toon Army will be hopeful of cementing their head-to-head form against Forest by kicking off the new season on the right foot.

BoyleSports have already made Newcastle odds-on favourites at 8/13 in the betting for their opening day assignment, while a 2-0 win to kick off the new campaign is rated at a generous 13/2 given two of the last three league meetings at home to Nottingham Forest have ended in 2-0 wins.

The credentials of Eddie Howe's men will be put to the test early next season as the new fixture list has also thrown up early meetings with last season's top two within the first five matches. Manchester City are pencilled in for a trip to St. James' Park on August 20th while an away trip to Anfield follows on the last day of the month.

However, there is growing confidence amongst punters that Newcastle will be in the mix at the right end of the table this coming season. A top six finish come next May was chalked up as a 5/2 shot, but that has now been enhanced to 5/1 in a price boost now live on the BoyleSports app. 7/1 is also available on a top four finish, while those even more bullish about the Premier League trophy making its way into the cabinet can get a juicy 66/1.

An even more generous 100/1 is up for grabs about Newcastle finishing the season as the highest scoring team in the Premier League, while it's a 66/1 shot that they top the table on Christmas Day.

That was a good omen for eventual champions Manchester City last season, although the race to top the table at Christmas ends in the second week of November this time, before the league schedule takes a break and allows the World Cup in Qatar to take centre stage.

Newcastle to finish in the Premier League top six was 5/2... now 5/1!
