Magpies or Morecambe will face Newport next week after the Exiles shocked Watford on Tuesday night

The League Two outfit, managed by former Darlington midfielder Michael Flynn, shocked their Championship opponents at Rodney Parade as they reached the fourth round of the competition for the first time in their history.

Newport - who beat Cambridge 1-0 in the first round and Swansea City 2-0 in the second - went in front through Tristan Abrahams' spot-kick in the 18th minute before Joss Labadie made it 2-0 ten minutes later. Adalberto Penaranda pulled one back for the Hornets from the penalty spot, but Padraig Amond secured County's passage in the 65th minute before substitute Stipe Perica was sent off late on for Watford.

United take on Morecambe on Wednesday evening for the right to travel to Rodney Parade, with fourth round ties taking place in the week commencing 28th September. Sadly the game - as with all second, third and fourth round ties in the competition - will be played behind closed doors.

Newcastle's only previous cup meeting with Newport was in the FA Cup in 1921/22. United were 6-0 winners in a first round tie at St. James' Park.

The Magpies also claimed their record win - 13-0 - against the Welsh club in October 1946, but County won the last of the three previous meetings between the two clubs, a 4-2 victory in June 1947.

Relegated from the Football League in 1988, the club went out of business the following year but after being reformed by 400 supporters, they returned to the league after a 25-year absence in 2013 and narrowly missed out on promotion to League One in 2018/19, losing to an extra-time goal against Tranmere Rovers in the play-off final at Wembley.

Wednesday night's game against Morecambe is available to watch for £10 via the Carabao Cup official live streaming platform
