Newcastle United's women's team has been relaunched as part of Newcastle United Foundation, the club’s official registered charity.

The relaunch of Newcastle United Women (NUW) is part of the Foundation’s exciting plans for women and girls' football locally.

With continued support from Newcastle United, Newcastle United Women has a bright future as an integral part of a newly-developed talent pathway for girls in the region.

The number of girls participating in football with Newcastle United Foundation is growing year on year.

This season, almost 700 girls will play football with the Foundation as part of Premier League Girls, with 170 enrolled on an Advanced Coaching Programme led by former Newcastle United Women’s captain, Lisa Bell.

The newly-created Newcastle United Women, initially formed in 1989 as Newcastle United Women’s FC, will act as a direct route for girls playing in the Foundation’s grassroots programmes to playing in the famous black and white kit.

Kate Bradley, head of Newcastle United Foundation, said: “We hope this news is a welcome boost for girls football in Newcastle.

"Our ambition is to encourage more women and girls of all abilities to play football.

"This partnership with Newcastle United Women will strengthen the pathway for our talented players so that they can take to the field in future to represent our club and even their country.”

Lee Charnley, managing director at Newcastle United, added: "Aligning Newcastle United Women with the Foundation is an important step in securing the team's future.

"The Foundation continues to bring football and the community even closer together and this provides women and girls with a clear route into enjoying our national game."
