After joining from MLS outfit Atlanta United a week ago, Almirón trained with his new teammates for the first time on Wednesday afternoon, before being unveiled to the media at a press event at St. James’ Park earlier today.
The Paraguayan international has not played a competitive game of any sort since 9th December, when Atlanta saw off Portland Timbers to secure the MLS Cup – the first piece of major silverware in the club’s short history.
Despite that, however, Almirón is confident he will be able to play a part for the Magpies at Molineux in four days’ time – assuming boss Rafa Benítez feels the same way.
“It’s been a hectic week and there has been a lot to sort out. Now, I feel more settled and I feel very, very happy that I can train on a daily basis,” he said. “It’s great to get to work – I’ve managed to put in some decent work with my teammates on the training ground already, and that’s something I felt I needed. I feel good in myself. Physically, I feel good, and it’s great to get the chance to focus on working hard, adapting to my teammates and settling in with their tactics. It’s down to the manager, and how he perceives the situation, as to whether I’ll be ready on Monday, but certainly I feel ready and I’m keen to take part.
“I was fortunate, before coming here, that pre-season had started – I had started pre-season with Atlanta. There were one or two formalities to sort out with my visa and in that time I only had the chance to train either by myself or with a couple of teammates, but now I’ve had a chance to train with the full squad and it’s about integrating and settling in as soon as possible.”
Though he is yet to kick a ball for United in anger, Almirón also took a moment to thank the Magpies’ fans for their outpouring of support over the last week – and spoke of his excitement at the prospect of stepping out onto the St. James’ Park turf for the first time against Huddersfield Town later this month.
“I think it’ll be absolutely great,” he said. “I think the feeling will be magnificent. I’d like to say I’m really grateful for the way I’ve been welcomed by the supporters. I’ve felt that support and the kindness and good feelings towards me already. I really can’t wait for the moment to come where I can actually turn out for the side here at home.
“I’m looking forward to the experience of settling in here. My partner will be coming over, and also my parents and friends will be coming over to see me. The bits of the city I have seen already, I have liked a lot, and I am sure that the more I see of it the more I will like it. It has been a great experience for me so far.”
