The vastly-experienced Marriner has been appointed for the fixture as United head to Anfield just three days on from their 1-1 draw at Wolves, in which Allan Saint-Maximin's late volley rescued a point for Eddie Howe's men.

The 51-year-old has been an established top flight official since 2005, having worked his way up through the Birmingham Amateur Football League, the Southern Football League and the EFL. His first Premier League game actually came in November 2004, when he oversaw Charlton's 4-0 win over Norwich City at The Valley.

He was a FIFA-listed referee between 2009 and 2017, meaning Marriner was the man in the middle for international matches, and he also has an FA Cup final appointment on his CV: the 2013 final between Wigan Athletic and Manchester City at Wembley.

Last term, Marriner refereed two Newcastle matches, both at St. James' Park - the 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in October 2021, in which Jonjo Shelvey was sent off, and the 1-0 reverse to Jurgen Klopp's Reds in April.
