Goalkeeper Dan Langley is hopeful Newcastle United Under-23s can revert to winning ways in Premier League 2 as the young Magpies host Swansea City on Monday.

Neil Redfearn's side face the Swans at St. James' Park in division two (kick-off 7pm BST) aiming to bounce back from a narrow 2-1 defeat against their West Bromwich Albion counterparts, with the Baggies netting the winning goal in stoppage-time.

Langley, who has featured between the sticks in the last two league games, is targeting a maiden appearance at Newcastle United's home ground as well as securing a third league victory in four matches.

The 18-year-old told nufc.co.uk: "It's a really important game for the squad after a disappointing result against West Brom on Monday. Hopefully, we can bounce back with the next few games coming up.

"I thought it was a really good performance by the lads but we were just unlucky to come away on the wrong side after conceding in the last minute. We played against quite a senior side in West Brom and managed to deal with that and played some good football.

"I'd be really excited if I get the opportunity to play at St. James' Park. Everyone wants to play there and it gets you up for the big occasions and means that little bit more when you play there. Hopefully, we can get a positive result.

"That's where the first team play and, in your head, it makes you feel more involved and that's where you want to end up playing. It gives you a good insight into what it could be like."

Newcastle are currently one point adrift of Swansea, who were relegated from division one last term, and Langley is expecting a tight encounter as they bid to leapfrog the Welsh outfit.

The young Magpies are yet to record a clean sheet this term in all competitions, which Langley is eager to do in order to propel his side up the league ladder.

The teenager added: "They'll be a good side but we know if we play our game, we feel that we can beat anybody in the league. No matter who we are against, we'll try to play to best of our ability and hopefully get a good result.

"I feel we could be higher up the league as our recent performances have not backed up with the results so hopefully the results can take care of itself if we continue to perform well.

"Obviously, we want to try and keep as many clean sheets as possible and it's something we're working hard on. Hopefully, they can come soon but as long as we can get strong results, clean sheets are a bonus."

After spending numerous under-23 fixtures situated on the bench, Langley admitted his delight in making his full debut for United's second-string during a 3-2 win against Norwich City in September.

And the Newcastle-born shot-stopper, who signed his first professional contract with his boyhood club last summer, revealed he is enjoying the battle for the number one spot between fellow goalkeeper Jake Turner.

"It was great to make my full debut against Norwich," Langley said. "Being able to get my first appearance after being on the bench so many times was really good for me and getting the win was great too.

"We've got healthy competition between each other. In training, we get along really well and everything is decided on who is going to play. Whoever is playing, the other one is supportive so it's good competition."

Tickets for the game at St. James' Park are available at the turnstiles, priced at £3 and £1 for concessions. Admission is free for season ticket holders and members.
