Two Newcastle United players featured for their respective countries over the weekend, with Chris Wood and Jeff Hendrick both in action.

Wood, who became New Zealand's all-time record goalscorer last week after braces against Fiji and New Caledonia, lined up for the All Whites as they continued their bid to reach the 2022 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Tahiti.

The former Burnley frontman played the full 90 minutes in Doha as Liberato Cacace's goal separated the sides, with Danny Hay's men now set to face the Solomon Islands on Wednesday (kick-off 6pm) with a place in June's play-off final – the winners of which will qualify for this year's tournament – at stake.

Queens Park Rangers loanee Hendrick, meanwhile, started for the Republic of Ireland in their 2-2 friendly draw with Belgium in Dublin.

The United midfielder, who is spending the remainder of the campaign on loan at Loftus Road, lined up in midfield for Stephen Kenny's side but it was his replacement Alan Browne whose late equaliser brought the hosts back onto level terms at the Aviva Stadium.

Michy Batshuayi had put the visitors ahead before Chiedozie Ogbene's leveller, with Hans Vanaken restoring Belgium’s lead before Browne’s 85th-minute intervention.

Hendrick made way for Preston midfielder Browne with just under quarter of an hour of the contest remaining, with another friendly against Lithuania at the Aviva on Tuesday night (7:45pm kick-off) next up for the 30-year-old.
