The Ebac Northern League Division Two side are battling to stay afloat and, with falling gates, a lack of sponsors and increased costs, there is a real possibility that the final whistle could blow on 105 years of footballing history.
However, a 530 crowd brought in some much-needed cash for the Magpies' non-league neighbours, while coach Peter Beardsley also held a sold-out question and answer session after the game.
Former Darlington and Carlisle winger Adam Rundle scored the only goal of the game, netting direct from a corner inside the opening 20 minutes.
And despite a lively showing from Danish teenager Elias Sorensen, a young United side struggled to create many chances to equalise.
However, Beardsley told nufc.co.uk: "It worked out well. They had a record crowd and were very hospitable towards us.
"Hopefully they got out of it everything they wanted and we were happy to help out."
