With no Newcastle United match at St. James’ Park this weekend, the focus in the city will switch to an event celebrating a visit by Martin Luther King Jr. to Tyneside 50 years ago.

The Freedom on the Tyne event - part of the Freedom City celebrations - takes place on Sunday 29th October and includes performances by artists, musicians, dancers and community groups across several buildings and streets.

The event, organised between NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Newcastle University and Northern Roots, will culminate in a parade across the Tyne Bridge, which will be closed to traffic.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s visit to Tyneside took place in November 1967, when he was awarded an honorary degree by Newcastle University - the only such award he received from a UK university in his lifetime.

An iconic figure in the civil rights movement, Dr King Jr. gave his final speech outside of the US to mark that occasion before his death in April 1968.
