Newcastle United duo Rob Elliot and Ciaran Clark have been named in the provisional Republic of Ireland squad for their final two World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Martin O’Neill’s side face Moldova at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday, 6th October before heading to Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Monday, 9th October looking to move into an automatic qualification place in Group D.

They currently sit third in the table as they bid to qualify for the 2018 finals. Eire are just one point behind second-placed Wales, who have 14 points, and five points behind group leaders, Aleksandar Mitrovic’s Serbia.

And goalkeeper Elliot, who has four caps to his name, is one of four stoppers in the squad, while 26-cap Clark is will be hoping to help his country earn the points which could secure what would be a second major tournament for the centre half, who featured at the 2016 European Championships.

Former United striker Daryl Murphy, who left for Nottingham Forest in the summer, is also named in the squad, which will be trimmed after all the players report to the camp on Monday, 2nd October.
