Teenage Newcastle United midfielder Nathan Carlyon has been shortlisted for the Under-18 Premier League goal of the season award.

The 18-year-old’s strike against Leeds United in the Magpies’ 2-2 opening-day draw at home is one of five efforts nominated for the prize, with the winner set to be revealed on Wednesday evening.

Carlyon’s stunning effort from his own half came just moments after Leeds had gone 2-1 up with four minutes remaining.

The youngster collected possession from kick-off before taking a look up and sending a sensational shot straight over the visitors’ backtracking goalkeeper all the way from the centre circle – earning Neil Winskill’s side a point in the process.

The other shortlisted goals came from Leeds’ Joseph Snowdon, Chelsea’s Jude Soonsup-Bell, Diamond Edwards of Southampton and Mateusz Musialowski of Liverpool.

A Premier League Football Development panel compiled the shortlist after nominations from club coaches, with a vote on the winner set to take place at Wednesday’s Premier League Academy Awards ceremony.

Carlyon was a mainstay of Winskill’s side last term, with his superb leveller against Leeds his only goal of the 2020/21 campaign.
