After Tuesday's jubilation that followed the Magpies' Carabao Cup semi-final win over Southampton, Eddie Howe's side are back in league action at St. James' Park against the Hammers, with Bankes set to oversee just his second game involving Newcastle so far this term.
The first came at Molineux back in August, when Allan Saint-Maximin's spectacular late volley rescued a point for the Magpies. On that occasion, the 40-year-old dished out three yellow cards during the 1-1 draw, with one being issued to United defender Fabian Schär.
Bankes became a Select Group 1 official prior to the 2019/20 season and, in the February of that campaign, he issued his first red card since becoming a top flight referee. It was given to United's Austrian loanee Valentino Lazaro during a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
So far in 2022/23, Bankes has refereed games in the Premier League, Championship, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, as well as a couple of Europa Conference League qualifiers, and has only shown one red card - to Nottingham Forest's Orel Mangala in their Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
