Brazilian international midfielder Guimarães joined the Magpies from Lyon in January 2022.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Guimarães made his professional debut at the age of 17 for Audax in his native country before establishing himself in the first-team of the São Paulo-based outfit. Following a positive loan stint at Athletico Paranaense during the 2017/18 campaign, he completed a permanent move to the Série A side on a three-year deal.
After amassing a century of competitive outings for Paranaense, winning four trophies as well as featuring in the 2019 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Team of the Year, Guimarães signed for Lyon in January 2020.
He helped the French outfit to finish fourth place in his first season, and his performances at club level resulted in his first international call-up in October 2020 before making his senior debut the following month.
An Olympic Gold medallist with Brazil at the 2020 Tokyo Games, Guimarães started every game for Seleção during their successful campaign in Japan, defeating Spain 2-1 in the final after extra-time. He was also part of their squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Guimarães has enjoyed an outstanding start to his time on Tyneside, immediately becoming a fans' favourite and a key part of United's dynamic midfield. He surpassed the 100-game mark for the club towards the end of the 2023/24 season.
