The young Magpies, who reached the last 16 of the competition last season, bowed out at the third round stage courtesy of goals from forwards Matthew Argent-Barnes and Eddie Brown.

It was Young who halved the deficit for Newcastle, firing a 20-yard free kick over the wall into the bottom left corner to give his side a glimmer of hope, but they were unable to find a late equaliser.

Although the 17-year-old central midfielder was pleased with netting at the University of Bolton Stadium, he was ultimately left frustrated by the outcome.

"I was delighted to score my first goal in the Youth Cup," he told nufc.co.uk. "I played in the tournament last year but scoring at a ground like Bolton's was great.

"I thought we were going to push on and really go for it, but sadly it did not work out in the end.

"Overall, I thought it was an even game but we definitely had enough chances to win the game. We've had two shots cleared off the line and also hit the post in the second half.

"We were disappointed to go two goals behind but we picked it back up after scoring and looked like the better side by keeping possession of the ball while forcing Bolton onto the back foot.

"On another day, the chances we've had may have ended up in the back of the net."

Dave Watson's squad included several first-year scholars making their Youth Cup debuts and, despite the teenagers' inexperience, Young was full of praise for his teammates.

He added: "It was a good experience for the younger lads as it can put them in good stead for playing in games like this next season.

"Everybody that played gave 100 per cent and I don't think we could have given much more. The result could have gone either way."
