Newcastle United Under-23s will defend their Hong Kong Football Club Citi Soccer Sevens title at this year’s tournament in May, it has been confirmed.

The young Magpies – who won the seven-a-side competition in the Happy Valley in 2018 – will fly out to compete once more at the Hong Kong Football Club Stadium between 17th and 19th May.

United are one of eight British clubs set to take part, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, West Ham United and Leicester City, while Scottish side Rangers – who were beaten by Callum Roberts’ golden goal in 2018’s final, as Ben Dawson’s youngsters lifted the trophy after a 1-0 win – will also feature.

That triumph last summer ended Newcastle’s six-year wait for their second Citi Soccer Sevens title, having first won it back in 2012 with a team featuring Paul Dummett, James Tavernier and Lubo Satka.

And Dawson may opt to include some of last year’s winners in his squad for the end-of-season tournament, with the likes of Owen Bailey, Nathan Harker and Matty Longstaff all having played their part in 2018.

Further details, including the group stage draw, will be announced in due course.
