A young Newcastle United supporter has won a Pride of Britain award this week following a surprise from his favourite player, Kieran Trippier

Ravi Adelekan, who faces ongoing health issues after a devastating brain tumour, has been acknowledged with a Child of Courage award for his work campaigning to help raise funds and awareness in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity and Braintrust.

The eight-year-old and his family have raised over £82,000 for the charities despite struggling with a number of challenges, including balance issues, tremors, facial palsy and problems with his sight and hearing.

Ravi, a huge Magpies supporter, was diagnosed with a tumour on his brainstem in September 2021 and required life-saving treatment at King's College Hospital. He was then required to learn to walk and feed himself again.

Ravi attended United's trip to his local club Brighton and Hove Albion with his family earlier this season but had no idea that Trippier and team-mate Bruno Guimarães would be waiting to meet him pitch-side to reveal he would be a Pride of Britain winner. Trippier then sought him out amongst the away support after the game to hand over his matchworn shirt.

Trippier said: "It was great to meet Ravi and his family after hearing everything he's been through. He's had a difficult time but you can tell he goes about life with such positivity and energy - he's an inspiration to us all and his Pride of Britain award is really well deserved.

"Hearing his story really puts things into perspective so it was important that we were able to support him as a club and give him a day to remember. Hopefully we'll see him at St. James' Park again very soon."
