After making an unbeaten start to their Premier League 2 campaign, midfielder Jack Young is hopeful Newcastle United Under-23s can record a third league victory in a row ahead of Monday's trip to West Bromwich Albion (kick-off 7pm BST).

The young Magpies travel to New Bucks Head, home of National League North outfit AFC Telford United, aiming to return to the top spot of Division Two with a victory over their Baggies counterparts.

United's youngsters have netted seven goals in their opening three league fixtures, conceding just once in the process and Young, who made his first-team debut for his boyhood club in July during a 3-2 pre-season win at Doncaster Rovers, is hopeful United's second-string can continue their promising form.

The 20-year-old midfielder told nufc.co.uk: "Our main goal is to continue our unbeaten start in the league and we are fully focussed on trying to pick up three points on Monday night.

"More importantly, if we can keep the unbeaten run going it will keep us in great stead towards the Christmas period.

"In the league, the lads have been excellent defensively. That's a big plus and something we probably didn't have as much of last season in a solid base to build on.

"The new lads who have came in have taken their chance and shown a great understanding of the formation and what it means to keep the ball out of the back of the net.

"I think the competition within the squad is great. It's a solid group of lads who are all showing a great attitude and wanting to play together. Everyone wants to work hard and are pulling in the same direction as you can tell with the league results so far."

Despite suffering successive cup defeats in recent weeks, against Sheffield Wednesday and Watford Under-23s in the EFL Trophy and Premier League Cup respectively, United's second-string aim to replicate their last away league visit - a 4-0 league victory against Birmingham City.

Young, however, is aware of the threat the West Midlands outfit can possess, with Newcastle suffering a narrow 1-0 away defeat last term.

"It's always been a tight encounter against West Brom, especially away from home," the Morpeth-born central midfielder added. "They're physical and quite direct so we've been working on how to deal with that in the last few days building up to the game.

"Although we respect them as they've been a tough team to play, we know if we can play our football then there should be nothing to worry about.

"We've already scored a number of goals, which have came from how we have been pressing, almost from the defensive side. We've been able to switch from defending to attacking quickly and we've scored from forcing our opponents into making mistakes which is good to see."

Following a bright beginning to this season's Premier League 2 campaign, Young also has his sights set on securing promotion with the young Magpies, who have qualified for the play-off spots twice in their last five league campaigns.

"Being a Newcastle player, we go into every game expecting to produce a good performance and win," he added. "I believe we are the biggest team in the division, as a club, and we should be aiming for the top.

"We should be trying to get promoted and if we can keep the run going, that's something we wouldn't shy away of saying we want to do."
