DeAndre Yedlin believes Newcastle have a team "capable of doing great things" in the EFL Cup - but insists the Magpies can't look further than Tuesday night's last-16 tie against Preston North End.

Rafa Benitez's side are top of the Sky Bet Championship and have won their last five league matches, while they have eased past Cheltenham and Wolves in the cup so far.

Promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking is United's main priority this season, but more than 46,000 supporters will be at St. James' Park to see if the Magpies can reach the quarter-finals.

And USA international Yedlin told nufcTV: "We need to keep doing what we've been doing and that's winning games.

"The competition gets tougher and tougher as you go on but we have a great team that's capable of doing great things so I think we can make a good run.

"You want to take it game by game - and obviously the cup is the next game. We try to win every game we play in, no matter what it is. Even if it's a friendly, you're trying to win.

"We'll put out a strong line-up for the cup and whoever plays, I'm sure will be able to get the job done."Yedlin is hoping to keep his place at right-back after starring in Saturday's 3-0 win against Ipswich.

He played in the 2-0 win against Wolves in the previous round and he said: "That was my first start so I really enjoyed it."It's another game and another opportunity to win so it's very exciting to be able to go out and play."
