Dwight Gayle’s brace gave United a two-goal lead at the Vitality Stadium as the Magpies turned in a dominant first half display on the south coast.

But Adam Smith’s strike and a last-gasp leveller from former United midfielder Dan Gosling earned the Cherries a point after a late fightback, meaning the visitors had to settle for a point.

Yedlin, who put in another energetic display down the right flank, admitted that there was an element of frustration that his side couldn’t bring three points back to Tyneside.

But he said there were also plenty of pluses to take from their performance as Rafa Benítez’s men came away with something to show for their efforts.

“There are lessons to be taken from every game, but as much as there are lessons there are also positives to take from today’s game,” the American international told nufc.co.uk. “I thought in the first half we controlled the game very well, and even parts of the second half. But it’s just a matter of controlling it for 90 minutes, and not for 60 or whatever it may be.

“Everybody’s obviously disappointed. We were up 2-0 and we had opportunities to go to 3-0 on some occasions, but we didn’t take those chances and found ourselves defending a lot for the last 20 minutes.

“Credit to them – they did well, kept the pressure on and the ball in our half, and they finished their chances. It’s disappointing because we were in a great position, but that doesn’t change what we need to do next week.”

United head to Liverpool next Saturday, and Yedlin believes ensuring that their performance levels remain high for the full 90 minutes is vital if Newcastle are to continue to climb the Premier League table.

“That’s something that comes with experience, so obviously were all disappointed about it – in no way are we happy with the point,” he said. “We thought we deserved three. But at the end of the day, we got a point out of it, and now we have to go to Liverpool next week and do a job.

“I think if you were to tell us to take four points from these last two games it would have been a pretty reasonable result for us. We could have got six and that’s what disappointing. But we go on, we’ll keep pushing forward, and we’ll keep fighting.”
