Newcastle United will face Tranmere Rovers in the second round of this season's Carabao Cup

Eddie Howe's side will travel to Prenton Park for their 152nd League Cup tie after the draw was made on Wednesday night following Sunderland's televised first round exit at Sheffield Wednesday.

Mark Chapman oversaw proceedings at Hillsborough alongside Michael Gray and Clinton Morrison, with United one of the 13 Premier League clubs not competing in European competitions to enter the competition at this stage, along with Burnley and Watford from the Sky Bet Championship.

Tranmere have lost their opening two games in League Two this season but beat Accrington Stanley in round one after an epic penalty shoot-out on Tuesday night, following a 2-2 draw at the Wham Stadium.

United travelled to Tranmere in the third round of the same competition in the 1998/99 season, with Paul Dalglish scoring the only goal of the game. In total, the two sides have met ten times before - most recently at the quarter-final stage of the FA Cup in 2000 - with Newcastle winning seven and Rovers coming out on top on three occasions, albeit one of them on penalties following an amazing 6-6 draw in the Zenith Data Systems Cup in October 1991.

The Carabao Cup is regionalised in the early rounds, with the draw split into a southern and northern section until the third round.

Second round ties will take place in the week commencing Monday, 22nd August. The date and ticket details will be confirmed on nufc.co.uk shortly.
