Yedlin hurt his hand in the Magpies’ 3-0 defeat to Leicester on New Year’s Day, but the American has recovered in time to start at right wing back in a five-man United defence today.
There is a rather more unfamiliar look to the rest of the Magpies’ backline, though, with a string of players sidelined through injury. Christian Atsu starts on the opposite flank to Yedlin, with Federico Fernández, Emil Krafth and Isaac Hayden in the centre. For Krafth, it is a first start of any sort since September.
Matty and Sean Longstaff begin the game together in midfield – the former making his debut in the competition. United’s front three, meanwhile, are unchanged from New Year’s Day, with Miguel Almirón providing support to Joelinton and Yoshinori Muto.
Young trio Lewis Cass, Tom Allan and Elias Sørensen have all been named on the Magpies’ bench, the latter two having figured during last summer’s Premier League Asia Trophy in China. Having recovered from the ankle injury that has kept him out for four months, Matt Ritchie makes United’s list of substitutes, too, as does Ki Sung-yueng, who has only played three times this term.
Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, DeAndre Yedlin, Emil Krafth, Federico Fernández, Isaac Hayden, Christian Atsu, Matty Longstaff, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almirón, Joelinton, Yoshinori Muto.
Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Lewis Cass, Florian Lejeune, Ki Sung-yueng, Matt Ritchie, Tom Allan, Elias Sørensen.
