Gayle – the Magpies’ top scorer during last year’s Championship-winning campaign – comes in for Ayoze Pérez, who had started each and every one of United’s Premier League fixtures prior.

There is also a change in central midfield, as Isaac Hayden – a substitute at Burnley on Monday night – comes in for Mohamed Diamé.

Hayden will play alongside Jonjo Shelvey in the engine room, with Christian Atsu on the left and Matt Ritchie on the opposite flank.

Newcastle’s backline is unchanged, with Javier Manquillo, Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and DeAndre Yedlin starting as a unit for the fourth game in succession.

Rob Elliot continues between the sticks, while there is a place on the bench for frontman Aleksandar Mitrović, who has made just two appearances in the top flight this term.

Newcastle United: Rob Elliot, DeAndre Yedlin, Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo, Matt Ritchie, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Christian Atsu, Joselu, Dwight Gayle.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Ciaran Clark, Jacob Murphy, Mohamed Diamé, Ayoze Pérez, Jesús Gámez, Aleksandar Mitrović.
