A fit-again Kieran Trippier has been handed his first Newcastle United start for three months as the Magpies bring the curtain down on the 2021/22 campaign at relegation-threatened Burnley.

Trippier – who spent four years as a Burnley player (one on loan) between 2011 and 2015 – has played just once since injuring himself in February’s win over Aston Villa, a game in which he provided the decisive contribution. However, he has been given the nod to start against the Clarets, who could go down with anything less than victory this afternoon.

Jamaal Lascelles also returns to the side after beginning last week’s memorable victory over Arsenal as a substitute. He replaced Fabian Schär early into the second half on Monday night, with the Swiss international only making the bench this time out.

Otherwise, Eddie Howe’s line-up is unchanged. Former Burnley frontman Chris Wood returns to the Magpies’ bench, where there is also a spot for Federico Fernández, who hasn’t actually figured for Newcastle since mid-December’s 1-0 success over the Clarets at St. James’ – Howe’s first three-point haul as United boss.

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Kieran Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton, Miguel Almirón, Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Emil Krafth, Federico Fernández, Fabian Schär, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy, Dwight Gayle, Chris Wood.
