Jonjo Shelvey has been handed his first start since the opening day of the season as Graeme Jones shuffles his pack for Newcastle’s teatime clash at Brighton.

Shelvey has made just two appearances since the Magpies’ 4-2 defeat to West Ham back in August, amounting to less than 40 minutes of football. However, he has been given the chance to impress at the Amex this evening, coming in for Sean Longstaff in central midfield.

Elsewhere, Jacob Murphy replaces Javier Manquillo on the right side of defence, while Miguel Almirón starts in place of Ryan Fraser.

Though he has made six substitute appearances in the time since, Murphy hasn’t actually started for Newcastle since August’s 2-2 draw at home to Southampton. Almirón, meanwhile, plays from the off for the first time in more than a month.

Karl Darlow continues in goal, with Murphy joining Emil Krafth, Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie in the backline. Shelvey joins Isaac Hayden in midfield, while Almirón will look to support Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson in attack.

Longstaff, Manquillo and Fraser are all among Jones’ list of substitutes.

Newcastle United: Karl Darlow, Jacob Murphy, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Miguel Almirón, Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson.

Substitutes: Martin Dúbravka, Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schär, Jamal Lewis, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Ryan Fraser, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle.
