Ex-Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been given the nod to replace Sean Longstaff as Newcastle United take on Liverpool at Anfield.

Shelvey played nearly 70 times for the Merseyside outfit prior to his move to Swansea City in 2013, and with Longstaff missing through an ankle injury, the six-time England international has been preferred to Ki Sung-yueng in the Magpies’ engine room.

Otherwise, United are unchanged from the side who drew 1-1 with Watford at St. James’ Park a fortnight ago.

Martin Dúbravka starts between the posts, with Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett and Jetro Willems making up a five-man backline.

Shelvey partners Isaac Hayden in the middle of the park, with Christian Atsu, Miguel Almirón and Joelinton forming an attacking triumvirate. Paraguayan Almirón will be hoping to pick up where he left off on Tuesday night, when he struck his first international goal for La Albirroja against Jordan in Amman.

On the bench, there is a place for Longstaff’s younger brother Matty, who made his first-team debut for United against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup last month.

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett, Jetro Willems, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Christian Atsu, Miguel Almirón, Joelinton.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Javier Manquillo, Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernández, Matty Longstaff, Ki Sung-yueng, Yoshinori Muto.
