Federico Fernández makes his first appearance for three months as Newcastle United take on Burnley in a crunch Premier League encounter at Turf Moor.

The Argentine’s return to the centre of defence is timely given the loss of skipper Jamaal Lascelles, who is likely to miss much of the remainder of the season after picking up a foot injury. Also coming back into the backline is Ciaran Clark – an unused substitute against Spurs last week – with Emil Krafth dropping out of the side.

Allan Saint-Maximin made his return to action against José Mourinho’s charges seven days ago, coming off the bench in the second half. The Frenchman is again named as a substitute today, with leading goalscorer Callum Wilson joining him after a lengthy lay-off of his own. United have been unable to muster a single win since Wilson hobbled out of their 3-2 victory over Southampton two months ago.

Lascelles and Krafth aside, the Magpies’ line-up is unchanged from that which started against Spurs. Martin Dúbrvaka continues in goal, with Paul Dummett joining Fernández and Clark at the back. Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy again operate as wing backs.

Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey – Newcastle’s captain in Lascelles’ absence – are in central midfield, with Miguel Almirón, Joelinton and Dwight Gayle making up the Magpies’ attack.

Joe Willock – who netted United’s late equaliser against Tottenham – is among those who join Saint-Maximin and Wilson on the bench.

Newcastle United: Martin Dúbravka, Jacob Murphy, Federico Fernández, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Sean Longstaff, Jonjo Shelvey, Miguel Almirón, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle.

Substitutes: Karl Darlow, Emil Krafth, Javier Manquillo, Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick, Joe Willock, Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson, Andy Carroll.
