Ten-man Newcastle United suffered their sixth consecutive Tyne-Wear derby defeat as they went down 3-0 at Sunderland on Sunday.

Goals from Adam Johnson - a penalty - Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher separated the sides at the Stadium of Light in the Barclays Premier League fixture.

United's cause wasn't helped by having to play the whole of the second half with a numerical disadvantage, following a straight red card to Fabricio Coloccini, while they also lost Jack Colback to injury early in the second period.

The scoreline was harsh on United, who almost entirely dominated the first half but Aleksandar Mitrovic, Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko and Jack Colback all saw chances come and go.

And they were made to pay right on the stroke of half-time when Coloccini and Fletcher went shoulder to shoulder in the penalty area, the latter tumbled, and Johnson made no mistake from the spot.

Mitrovic spurned a great chance to equalise soon after the restart and it wasn't long before the Black Cats doubled their advantage, as Jones stabbed home from point-blank range.

United continued to press to try and get back in the contest but Sunderland secured all three points with time ticking away as Fletcher volleyed home a Younes Kaboul cross.

Newcastle will look to bounce back to winning ways on Saturday, as Stoke City come to St. James' Park.

Less than three minutes had elapsed when the Magpies created the first chance of the afternoon.

Aleksandar Mitrovic flicked on Jack Colback's inswinging free-kick but captain Coloccini was unable to volley past Costel Pantilimon from close range.

Moussa Sissoko also threatened following a typical driving run and Mitrovic glanced a header wide as the visitors enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening exchanges.

Wijnaldum - last weekend's four-goal hero - was next to try his luck, ending a flowing passing move by forcing Pantilimon into a full-length save down low to his left.

It was one-way traffic. On 26 minutes, former Black Cats midfielder Jack Colback's late dart into the box was almost rewarded when his volley from a Daryl Janmaat delivery wasn't dealt with by Pantilimon and nearly snuck in at the near post.

Mitrovic then volleyed wide before Sunderland were forced into two substitutions before half-time - Ola Toivonen and captain John O'Shea both hobbling off to be replaced by Jermain Defoe and Sebastian Coates.

In the 44th minute, Wijnaldum curled a 20-yard free-kick over the wall but was unable to beat Pantilimon, who stuck up a hand to tip the Dutchman's effort behind to safety.

And United's inability to take their chances was to prove crucial as, deep into two minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first period, Sunderland broke the deadlock.

As Fletcher and Coloccini chased Defoe's through ball into the penalty area, the pair went shoulder to shoulder, with Fletcher tumbling to the floor as the ball reached goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

Referee Robert Madley paused briefly before awarding a spot-kick, and then issuing a straight red card to United's skipper. And Johnson made no mistake with the penalty, firing a low strike into the bottom corner, past the despairing dive of Elliot.

Newcastle introduced defender Jamaal Lascelles at half-time and they were forced into another substitution within four minutes of the restart, as Colback was injured by a Lee Cattermole challenge.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, the visitors were doing everything they could to get back in the game, and came agonisingly close to a leveller on 55 minutes.

Ayoze Perez's attempted through ball was cut out by Cattermole but the loose ball fell straight to the feet of Mitrovic. The Serbian striker shaped to pull the trigger but insteasd cut back on to his right foot - taking DeAndre Yedlin out of the game in the process - but saw his eventual shot brilliantly blocked by Pantilimon.

Sunderland doubled their advantage in the 65th minute. Johnson's deep corner was volleyed goalwards through clutch of players by M'Vila and full-back Jones was on hand to turn it home from almost on the goalline.

Still United wouldn't lie down, though, and Pantilimon was forced into action almost immediately, diverting Wijnaldum's angled shot behind for a corner, from which Perez blazed a half-volley high and wide of the target.

At the other end, Johnson stepped inside of the right and crashed an effort against the crossbar, but the Magpies responded with Anita, Mitrovic and substitute Florian Thauvin all threatening.

However, the result was put beyond any doubt with five minutes remaining when the hosts raced upfield and caught Newcastle on the break. The ball reached Younes Kaboul wide on the left, and his inch-perfect cross to the far post was swept home on the volley by Steven Fletcher.
