Georginio Wijnaldum was the star of the show as Newcastle United recorded their first Barclays Premier League victory of the season with a 6-2 home win over Norwich City.

The Dutch international midfielder struck four goals at St. James' Park, with front pairing Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic also on target for the rampant Magpies.

Dieumerci Mbokani and Nathan Redmond netted for the Canaries, who were unable to cope with United's power in the final third.

Wijnaldum broke the deadlock when he latched on to Moussa Sissoko's pass and slotted home at the Gallowgate End, but the lead was to last just six minutes as Mbokani finished from close range to level.

Newcastle soon edged back in front through Wijnaldum again - this time heading home a Sissoko delivery - and Perez bagged goal number three of the afternoon, firing into the far corner.

Redmond reduced the deficit with an impressive volley to bring a pulsating first half to a close, but there was plenty more action after the break.

Mitrovic restored a two-goal advantage, thumping home a half-volley from the edge of the area, and Wijnaldum then completed his hat-trick when he nodded in Daryl Janmaat's cross.

There was still time for the all-action summer signing to fire home a deflected effort from distance, however, and give United a huge boost of confidence going in to next weekend's Tyne-Wear derby at Sunderland.

Both sides had plenty of possession in the opening exchanges without causing either goalkeeper any problems, but the game sprung into life in the 14th minute as United broke the deadlock.

Moussa Sissoko picked up a loose ball 20 yards out and shaped to shoot twice - fooling a couple of defenders in the process - before slotting an intelligent pass into the path of Wijnaldum.

The Dutch international steadied himself before planting a low, angled drive beyond John Ruddy for his third Magpies goal - all coming at the Gallowgate End.

Norwich responded immediately and Robbie Brady thumped a long-range drive against the upright, before they levelled on 20 minutes.

Brady spread the ball wide to left-back Martin Olsson, whose inch-perfect cross stabbed home by Dieumerci Mbokani from inside the six-yard box.

It was end-to-end stuff and Newcastle soon edged back in front thanks to Wijnaldum's second of the afternoon.

Again it was created by Sissoko, who wrapped his foot around an outstanding curled delivery, with Wijnaldum glancing a downward header underneath the body of Ruddy, who will feel he should have done much better.

And just past the half-hour mark it was 3-1 as Perez got in on the act.

The move started on the edge of Newcastle's penalty area as Jack Colback bravely threw himself in the way of a goalbound shot. As the ball broke to Sissoko, he was given the time and space to carry it half the length of the pitch before releasing Perez.

The Spanish starlet had close attention in the form of two Canaries defenders but wasn't fazed and, although his first effort was blocked, he seized upon the loose ball, firing into the far corner.

That was the breathing space United so desperately wanted but, within two minutes, Norwich dragged themselves back into the contest.

It stemmed from another Olsson cross, and although this one looked as if it was missing everyone, Redmond stole in umarked at the far post to volley home.

Wijnaldum and Perez went close to extending the hosts' lead as half-time approached but neither were able to steer close-range efforts on target.

The second period was less than eight minutes old when Wijnaldum turned from goalscorer to goal-saver, back-peddaling to clear Sebastien Bassong's header off the line at the Gallowgate End.

Norwich were well on top and Redmond twice threatened - once direct from a free-kick, and the other dragging a low effort harmlessly wide.

But United continued to look dangerous on the break and restored their two-goal advantage through Mitrovic in the 64th minute.

The Serbian international front man had been quiet by his usual standards but when Sissoko lofted the ball into his path on the edge of the area, he took it down on his chest before rifling a superb finish past the helpless Ruddy.

And two minutes later Newcastle scored their fifth of the afternoon, with Wijnaldum completing his hat-trick.

The former PSV Eindhoven skipper swept the ball out to Janmaat and charged into the area, meeting the resulting cross with a thumping header that errupted St. James' Park.

And if a treble wasn't enough, Wijnaldum put the icing on the cake by scoring once more before the close of proceedings.

Picking up the ball out towards the left, he was given time and space to cut inside and duly unleashed a 20-yard strike which deflected off the shin of Steven Whittaker and looped up and over Ruddy into the top corner.
