Newcastle United Women captain Amber-Keegan Stobbs says the team has made huge progress since their 4-0 triumph at AFC Fylde Women in their opening league match of the season, as the Magpies gear up to face the same opponents at Kingston Park this weekend

Becky Langley's side currently sit top of the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division after nine matches and continue to impress in their first campaign in the division following promotion last term.

But despite their fine form, experienced midfielder Stobbs is urging caution from her team-mates ahead of what she expects to be another tough test on Sunday.

"This league is unpredictable and any game can be a difficult game," she said. "We will be prepping for it as we do with every game.

"We know that any game in this league can be a battle and currently we have a target on our back, sitting top of the league.

"They (AFC Fylde) created a few chances against us last time so we have to pride ourselves on our defending and stick to our standards. Hopefully, we finish the year well."

Sunday's fixture is Newcastle Women's last of 2023, with the Magpies not playing competitively again until they entertain Halifax Women on 7th January 2024.

Reflecting on the team's development since turning professional in the summer, Stobbs, who opened her United account in that September victory at AFC Fylde, believes that result was a catalyst for where the Magpies find themselves currently.

"That was a great day," she said. "As you know, I am always proud of Newcastle and every game is important to me.

"It was my first goal, and that was the first performance when I think it really clicked and everything we were doing and working on, came out on the pitch.

"We have come a long way since then. I have fond memories of that game."

When Stobbs signed for Langley's team in the summer, her versatility was well-known from her previous spells with the likes of Lewes Women and Crystal Palace Women.

Having played as one of Newcastle's three defenders in recent weeks, she reiterated her desire to assist the team in any way she can.

"I have had experience playing there before," she explained. "I have always said to Becky that I am happy to play anywhere for the team and the most important thing is winning.

"Whatever I need to do or wherever I need to play to help the team, I am always happy about that."
