Dylan Stephenson is hopeful Newcastle United Under-21s can complete a positive run in this season's Newcastle Flooring Northumberland Senior Cup ahead of Wednesday's first round tie against Newcastle Blue Star.

The young Magpies host the Northern League Division Two outfit, who compete in the tenth tier of English football, at Whitley Park (kick-off 7.30pm BST) as they bid to reach the quarter-final stages of the competition.

Stephenson, who scored for the Magpies’ first-team during their 5-0 win against Al Hilal in December’s Diriyah Season Cup triumph in Riyadh, is determined for United's second-string to tackle the cup tie in the correct fashion in order to book their place in the last-eight.

The 20-year-old forward, who resides in Blyth, told nufc.co.uk: “Everyone is up for this game and it’s a one we are looking forward to and we want to win. We’ve drawn the last few games and lost on penalties against Port Vale so we’re looking to come out on top.

“We have quality in our squad but we need to make sure we match them, if not better them for physicality and win that battle first. It’s important we play our own game. As long as we do that, I think we will have a good chance of going through.

“We can’t approach it like it’s going to be an easy game. We need to go into as if we’re playing against any other side we’ve faced this season with the correct mindset to make sure we can get into the next round.”

Stephenson was part of the Magpies side which reached the Northumberland Senior Cup final in 2022, suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat against Blyth Spartans at St. James’ Park.

The versatile attacker, who can also play on the wing, is hopeful of producing another positive run in the tournament as Newcastle’s youngsters, who have won the competition a record 38 times, aim to lift the trophy for the first time since 2018 following a 3-1 triumph against Morpeth Town.

Stephenson added: “We want to go as far as possible in the competition and even win it. I think that would be really good for the team.

"We know the final is normally at St. James’ Park and it’s an opportunity anyone would want to take, playing in a cup final at our stadium. It would be a pleasure.“We’re really determined and it would be great to win a piece of silverware this season, both for the team and the club."

Admission for Wednesday's Northumberland Senior Cup first round tie at Whitley Park is free for season ticket holders. Otherwise, it's £3 for adults and £1 concessions.
