Former wing-half Stan Anderson, who had the distinction of captaining Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough, has sadly passed away. He was 84.

Born in Horden, County Durham, Stan made his senior Sunderland debut aged 19 and spent 11 years at Roker Park before moving north to St. James’ Park in November 1963.

After winning the second division title on Tyneside in the 1964/65 season, he completed his North East treble with a move to Middlesbrough, where he would see out his playing days.

Stan also gained full international honours during a distinguished professional career.

As well as earning two caps, he was part of England's travelling party for the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile but didn't make an appearance.

After hanging up his boots, Stan spent seven years as Middlesbrough manager between 1966 and 1973 before spells in charge of AEK Athens, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.

Stan, who is remembered fondly on Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside, sadly passed away on Sunday 10th June 2018.

Our deepest condolences go to Stan’s family and his many friends both in and out of football.
