In the end United prevailed from the spot thanks to the brilliance of goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka who, after a fine display in the 120 minutes of action, excelled in the shoot-out, repelling efforts from Szmodics and Dominic Hyam to send Newcastle into the last eight.
