Eight different players netted for the Magpies, with Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Sven Botman on target before half time and Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almirón, Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak scoring after the restart on a sensational afternoon for Eddie Howe's side, who tore the hapless Blades to pieces with an incisive, relentless display in front of goal.
The result equals United's biggest ever Premier League win, which came in 1999 when Sir Bobby Robson's Newcastle beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 at St. James' Park, and also saw Wilson climb into fifth place in the list of the club's all-time leading Premier League goalscorers.
An open start preceded a few half-chances for both sides: Luke Thomas had one for the hosts, seeing his back post effort charged down, and Wilson for United, whose shot was comfortably saved by Wes Foderingham. James McAtee's outside-of-the-boot cross found Thomas in space once again minutes later, but the wing back skewed his volley wide.
Just before the midway point in the half, though, the Magpies moved in front. They had lost Harvey Barnes to injury early on but his replacement Gordon made his presence felt immediately, showing great persistence on the byline to keep the ball in play - though the hosts did have a claim for handball against the former Everton winger - and cut back for Longstaff to sweep home the opening goal.
The goal dented the Blades' momentum and Gordon's pace was causing Paul Heckingbottom's men countless problems. Just after the half hour, it was two - Trippier's corner was perfect for Burn, who was charging in at the far post as his marker tried in vain to hold him back. The experienced defender's header was firm and accurate, arrowing into the bottom right-hand corner.
Five minutes later, another pinpoint Trippier delivery helped United make it three. His free kick from the right flank found Botman, and the Dutchman glanced it beyond Wes Foderingham's despairing dive to cap a clinical spell from the visitors.
Gordon saw a penalty appeal turned down after he was felled by Jayden Bogle and Wilson missed a couple of opportunities to extend the Magpies' lead, while Foderingham reacted swiftly to turn a deflected Gordon strike over the top in the half's dying moments as Howe's side pushed forward with purpose.
After the break, United's dominance was well established and there was a noticeable patience to some of their play. It was clear in the build-up to their fourth goal, which was guided home by Wilson. The visitors were camped in the Blades' half and either Elliot Anderson or Fabian Schär could have elected to shoot at different stages of the attack, but the former chose to play in Trippier down the right. The full back's first-time centre - his third assist - was perfect for Wilson, who stooped to head past Foderingham from six yards out.
And with an hour gone, another excellent approach paid dividends as Gordon curled home Newcastle's fifth. Anderson was involved in the build-up again but Gordon's shift inside and unerring shot into the bottom right-hand corner was superb, capping a fine individual display having come off the bench.
By the time Almirón surged through the middle and calmly slotted home with a quarter of the contest still remaining, many seats in the home supporters' areas of Bramall Lane had been vacated, and when Guimarães profited from a fortuitous richochet to coolly fire home the seventh with 72 minutes gone, even more Blades fans headed to the exits.
In the dying minutes, substitute Isak slotted home his side's eighth of the day, pouncing on a loose backpass and beating his man before finishing with aplomb to wrap up the scoring for an imperious Newcastle side who, in truth, could have netted double figures on this incredible afternoon in South Yorkshire.
