Fabian Schär’s stunning opener in Newcastle United’s 2-0 win against Burnley has been shortlisted for Carling Goal of the Month.

The Switzerland international took aim from 30 yards midway through the first half of the Premier League game at St. James’ Park, beating goalkeeper Tom Heaton with a thumping drive which flew in off the post.

And that goal against the Clarets – which was Schär’s third for the Magpies, after his brace against Cardiff City in January – has been nominated for February’s award, along with seven other strikes.

They include Andre Gomes’ effort for Everton against Wolves and Nathan Redmond’s for Southampton against Burnley.

Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are both nominated for their goals against Leicester City and Fulham respectively, while Liverpool pair Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane are included for their strikes against AFC Bournemouth and Watford.

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero’s curler against Chelsea is also on the shortlist, with 27-year-old Schär’s screamer also in contention.

Magpies supporters can vote for the United defender to win by clicking here. The winner will be announced on Friday, 8th March.
