Newcastle United midfielder Henri Saivet helped Senegal reach the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations with victory over Benin on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Turkish side Bursaspor, started for Aliou Cissé’s men in Cairo as they looked to seal their place in the last four.

And they were able to do so thanks to a second half strike from Everton’s Idrissa Gueye, who combined with Liverpool’s Sadio Mane before netting what proved to be the decisive goal in the 69th minute.

Former Bordeaux man Saivet played the full 90 minutes for the Lions of Teranga, who will now take on either Madagascar or Tunisia for a place in the final on Sunday.

He has now featured in four of Senegal’s five fixtures at this year’s tournament in Egypt.
