Newcastle United Under-21s face Heaton Stannington in the Newcastle Flooring Northumberland Senior Cup semi-finals on Tuesday night (kick-off 7.30pm GMT), with Darren Palmer vying to retain the trophy they lifted last season.

United's second-string face the Stan, who compete in the Northern Premier League Division One East, at Grounsell Park as they bid to seal a final showdown with Morpeth Town at St. James' Park.

Palmer, who signed his first professional contract with the Magpies last summer, believes the squad can prevail in the semi-final tie as Diarmuid O'Carroll's side aim to win the trophy in successive seasons for the first time since 2012.

"We're pushing for that this season - to try and get into the final, Palmer told newcastleunited.com. "It's a main focus in and around training and we're going into the game positively, hoping we can win the tournament.

"Where everyone is currently at in their careers, from under-16 level to the age we're at now, we want to be playing against senior sides and this is a good challenge for the group.

"Every game has a different feel to it and this cup brings that feeling of 'am I ready for this'? I believe we are and we are aiming to win the trophy back-to-back."

Palmer, who joined Newcastle's Academy in 2016, as relished his first season as a professional despite facing an injury concern in recent weeks.

The 19-year-old forward, who primarily plays as a right winger, believes he is "getting better every single day" and is hopeful of ending the 2024/25 campaign in positive fashion with United's second-string.

"I'm enjoying it all so I'm happy. There's lots to look forward to, with a good run of games, and we'll have a lot of different scenarios.

"It's a good thing for the group. We've had a real test for the last couple of months, with many games up and down the country and a lot of travelling to do but it has benefited us all.

"I also had a MCL (knee) injury so I was proud of myself to get back to full fitness after a few weeks out. I've had little niggles but never a proper injury, which was all new to me.

"I took positives from it, learnt from that tough experience and I now want to get a run of games under my belt."
