Newcastle United are once again supporting the Stoptober campaign, which is now well under way.

The campaign aims to encourage football fans to stop smoking for good, starting with a 28-day smoke-free challenge throughout the month of October.

New research by the campaign has revealed that more than three quarters of football fans across the country who currently smoke would like to quit.

Six out of ten fans do so on their way to the ground, with the use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes - including all vaping devices - prohibited in all areas of Premier League stadiums, including St. James’ Park.

Dr Paul Catterson, Newcastle United's club doctor, said: “We are pleased to be supporting the Stoptober campaign, which encourages people to give up smoking for the entire month with a view to kicking the habit for good.

"As a medical professional who has worked in hospitals for many years, I have seen the shocking effects that smoking can have on a person's health.

"I would encourage anyone who currently smokes to give the campaign a go. We wish everyone taking part the best of luck."

A spokesperson for the Football Supporters Federation, said: “This research highlights the prevalence of smoking amongst fans but more importantly, their desire to quit is high and should be supported by clubs across England.

“Football clubs are at the heart of local communities so it’s fantastic to see so many getting on board with Stoptober to encourage those who want help in quitting.” Stoptober is back for a sixth year, having driven over a million and a half quit attempts to date.

Research has shown that people who have quit for 28 days are five times more likely to stop for good.
