Newcastle United suffered a third successive Premier League home defeat following a 2-1 loss against Crystal Palace at St. James' Park.

All three goals were netted in the opening 45 minutes, with the Magpies taking the lead inside 70 seconds through Jonjo Shelvey's impressive strike.

However, Roy Hodgson's Eagles quickly turned the game in their favour before the half-hour mark through Jaïro Riedewald's deflected long-range effort and Gary Cahill's header.

Steve Bruce's side, targeting back-to-back league victories following a 2-0 triumph at Everton, got off to the perfect start on Tyneside through Shelvey's first Premier League goal of the 2020/21 campaign.

After Miguel Almirón managed to poke the ball away from Scott Dann before delivering a teasing cross fell into the path of Wilson, the forward teed up the stand-in captain on the edge of the penalty area who rifled his first-time attempt into the bottom left-hand corner.

The Magpies were unfortunate not to double their lead shortly after breaking the deadlock as Ryan Fraser's cross from the right flank was flicked into Jeff Hendrick's path but the Irish midfielder hooked the ball narrowly wide of the far post.

Jordan Ayew almost drew Palace level as the forward got onto the end of Eberechi Eze's teasing cross but a crucial block from Ciaran Clark, making his 100th competitive start for United, turned the ball out for a corner.

Wilson went close to netting his 11th league goal of the season as the 28-year-old brilliantly improvised from Fraser's cross, this time from the left wing, but sent a flicked attempt wide of the target.

In the 21st minute, the Magpies were dealt a disappointing blow as Riedewald drew the Eagles level. After dangerous build-up play from the visitors, the loose ball fell to the Dutchman who drilled a fierce effort towards goal, with Clark's deflection taking the ball past a helpless Karl Darlow.

Four minutes later, Newcastle fell behind as Eze's free-kick from the right wing was delivered into Cahill's path before the defender rose unmarked to nod the ball beyond Darlow.

Palace looked to have added a third when Nathaniel Clyne's cross was touched on by Michy Batshuayi for Wilfried Zaha to convert from close-range but the Belgian striker had strayed into an offside position.

A lively first-half continued as United went in search of an equaliser of their own when Fraser raced onto Wilson's neat through ball but the Scotland international saw his effort blocked by an alert Guaita.

Almirón, who netted his first goal for United against the Eagles in December 2019, almost registered his fourth league goal of the season as the Paraguayan's free-kick from the edge of the box was deflected over the crossbar before defender Fabian Schär headed iches wide from the resulting corner.

In the second half, Allan Saint-Maximin was introduced to the field shortly after the hour mark and the Frenchman made a positive impact after threaded a neat pass into Wilson's path but Nathaniel Clyne's challenge denied the striker from firing a shot towards goal despite protests for a penalty from the United players, who thought Wilson was brought down in the area.

The Magpies continued their push for an all-important second goal as Fraser's swinging free-kick flew into Shelvey's path but his header was steered over the crossbar.

Saint-Maximin then saw a powerful low drive blocked by Dann towards the closing stages after the winger cleverly advanced beyond Clyne before his fierce strike was vitally turned out for a corner by the Eagles centre-back.

Andros Townsend missed a golden opportunity to double Palace's advantage as Riedewald wriggled free from the byline before squaring the ball to the former Magpie but his attempt was horribly lifted over the bar.

There was late drama in the reverse fixture at Selhurst Park, with the Magpies netting two goals in the dying minutes in November and Andy Carroll went close to grabbing a stoppage-time equaliser as the forward rose from Jamal Lewis' cross but his header was kept out by Guaita as Newcastle's winless run on home soil extended to five matches.
