The Magpies continued their push for an all-important second goal as Fraser's swinging free-kick flew into Shelvey's path but his header was steered over the crossbar.

Saint-Maximin then saw a powerful low drive blocked by Dann towards the closing stages after the winger cleverly advanced beyond Clyne before his fierce strike was vitally turned out for a corner by the Eagles centre-back.

Andros Townsend missed a golden opportunity to double Palace's advantage as Riedewald wriggled free from the byline before squaring the ball to the former Magpie but his attempt was horribly lifted over the bar.
