Aleksandar Mitrović’s goal for Serbia in Friday’s group stage defeat to Switzerland saw him become the seventh Newcastle United player to net during a World Cup match.

The Smederevo-born forward opened the scoring in the fifth minute, only for goals by Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri to give the Swiss all three points in a dramatic finale.

The first Magpies player to have the honour of scoring during a World Cup was Chilean striker George Robledo who, along with United teammate Jackie Milburn, travelled to Brazil in 1950 for the fourth staging of the globe’s greatest tournament.

After losing their opening two matches to England and Spain, Chile recorded a 5-2 victory over the USA in their final group game and Robledo bagged the opener in Recife.

Four years later, Ivor Broadis scored twice in England’s 4-4 draw with Belgium in Basel.

A 2-0 win over hosts Switzerland saw the Three Lions progress to the quarter-finals, where they were defeated 4-2 by Uruguay.

The next Magpie to score was Peter Beardsley against Paraguay in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Beardsley also went on to successfully convert a penalty in a shoot-out defeat to West Germany in Italia 1990, by which time he was a Liverpool player.

In 1998, Alan Shearer scored England’s first against Tunisia in France ’98 and added to his tally against Argentina in the round of 16 before England agonisingly exited the tournament on penalties.

Shearer scored from the spot in the shootout but fellow Magpie David Batty missed the crucial kick to send the South American’s through.

Sure to be a popular quiz question, the next Newcastle United player to score for their country in the tournament was Australian Craig Moore in Germany in 2006.

Moore netted a penalty for the Socceroos in a 2-2 draw with Croatia, which saw them advance to the knock-out stage of the competition for the first time in history.

And prior to the current World Cup, Moussa Sissoko was on target for France in a 5-2 win over Switzerland in 2014.

Mitrović will be back in action on Wednesday 27th June (7pm GMT) when Serbia take on Brazil at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.
