Eddie Howe returns to the Vitality Stadium for the first time since his departure as Bournemouth boss in August 2020 and this will be the third time Attwell has officiated a fixture involving the Magpies this term.

The Warwickshire official was the man in the middle for United's 4-1 away win at Southampton in November, handing out one yellow card at St Mary's Stadium whilst booking no Newcastle players.

The 40-year-old, who became the youngest person ever to referee a Premier League fixture in 2008, then took charge of Newcastle's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against the Saints, booking eight players during United's 1-0 victory, sending off Southampton defender Duje Ćaleta-Car whilst booking Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimarães and Allan Saint-Maximin.
