United boss Eddie Howe returns to his former club in what will be the Magpies' final game before the international break, with Kavanagh - who hails from Ashton-under-Lyme - confirmed as the referee for the encounter on the south coast.
The 38-year-old has been a top flight official since the back end of the 2016/17 season, with his first game coming in April 2017 - a 1-0 win for Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.
Kavanagh, who has a Championship play-off final on his CV after taking charge of Brentford's win over Swansea at Wembley in 2021, has yet to show a red card in 2023/24. It will be his second appointment involving Newcastle this term, after Howe's side's 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Manchester City in September. On that occasion at St. James' Park, he showed four yellow cards, including two to United's Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães.
