The referee has been confirmed for United's midweek clash with Aston Villa

It will be the 35-year-old's third game involving the Magpies this term after he took charge of United's 2-2 draw against Manchester City at St. James' Park in November and the 1-0 home win over Chelsea in January.

The Lancashire-based official has refereed 27 matches in all so far this term, showing 96 yellow cards, but he's yet to brandish a red in the 2019/20 campaign.

Kavanagh, who was promoted to the Select Group of Referees in 2017, was the man in the middle for four of Newcastle's Premier League fixtures last season - a 1-0 win at Leicester, a goalless draw away to Southampton and defeats to Chelsea and West Ham.

On Wednesday at St. James' Park, Kavanagh will be assisted by Sian Massey-Ellis and Ian Hussin while Darren England is the fourth official.

Peter Bankes will be the video assistant referee and will be aided by Andy Garratt.

While supporters will not be able to attend, the match will be broadcast live on BT Sport.
